NOTE ON “SOURCE INDIA – ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN” 2009
Chennai – Dec. 21, 2009

Source India was a new initiative by ELCINA to address the problem of low value addition and inadequate local sourcing for manufacture of electronics equipment. While numerous attempts have been made to boost local manufacturing and encourage investment, the results have been disappointing and industry’s assessments show that local content has been gradually declining. In fact, the slide has been so dramatic from 40% in the mid-1990s, the share of local components and parts used in electronics manufacturing has gown down to less than 20%.

A number of policy actions, though belated, has been taken by the government and the industry has been making efforts to strengthen itself and compete successfully in a globalised environment. Source India is an effort which is in the sense similar to “direct actions” by the industry. The one-day event which includes a Conference, Mini Exhibition and One-to-One Business Meetings proposes to attract the problem by facilitating the following:-

  • Brining equipment manufacturers (OEMs and ODMs) and components/parts manufacturers and EMS companies together to discuss business opportunities.
  • Create an opportunity to display offerings by the local electronics value chain players, including suppliers as well as buyers.
  • Most of all, to enable focused interaction between serious players in the electronics industry which would throw out new ideas and opportunities and create greater trust and belief in the industry that it is possible to source more from India.
  • Invite global players and create possibilities of joint ventures which would bring in new technologies and investments and also open the Indian market to global manufacturers who are interested in a share in the same.

It is extremely heartening to note that 60 companies participated in this event which was focused on mass market products in the telecom, consumer and IT hardware segments. This included 9 major buyer companies such as Nokia, Tyco Electronics, Philips, Dixon Technologies, LG Electronics, HCL, Dell, Elcoteq and Foxconn.

It is noteworthy that out of 48 responses received in the Feedback Forms circulated to participants, 46 felt that it was a very useful programme and 45 agreed that it was the right format for this type of networking. Another important feedback was that 30, out of 48 respondents, confirmed that they have found new opportunities to buy and/or sell, thus adding value to the business. Further, 40, out of 48, have indicated that they would like to participate again in Source India next year.

With the above encouraging responses of participating in the event again, ELCINA plans to go ahead with this event next year and create more opportunities for local sourcing by improving on the lessons learned through this first experience which was extremely positive and encouraging.
