PC makers line up compact laptops for Indian youth

After witnessing a
not-so-happening market for the ultra small laptops in India
over the last few years, hardware manufacturers are all set to
experiment with a new segment of small and compact laptops.
Unlike ultra thin laptops, that were as small as 7 inch in
size and were largely used to meet the internet surfing
requirements, these are about 8.9 inch and are fully loaded to
meet the needs of corporate work. HP launched its 8.9 inch
Mini Notebook in India in June and ASUS’s 8.9 inch and 10 inch
laptops are expected to hit the market by August, 2008. Dell
and Acer are likely to follow suit. These laptops are expected
to be priced between Rs.30,000 and Rs.40,000.

ASUS to
seek 30K EE PCs a month in India
ASUS, the Chinese manufacturer of
desktops, laptops, and handsets, which launched
its
second version of the EE PC on 24th July/08 in Mumbai, expects
to sell about 30,000 units per month here in three month’s
time, although it
has been able to sell only 10,000
units of the products since its launch a few months back in
India. However, IDC India analysts do not see any such huge
surge in India that is unfulfilled. The market has still not
matured here and they expect growth only after Dec/08 when
domestic and global conditions are likely to improve.
According to IDC’s India Q1 PC Tracker report, of the total
shipment of 1,760,329 laptops in India, ultra-portables
comprised of only 6%. |

Intel launches next generation of its wireless chip
Intel, the world’s top PC chip
maker, on 15th July/08 launched in
Taipei the next-generation
of its Centrino wireless chip that it hopes will provide a new
revenue stream amid a broader push into mobile technologies.
The launch of the Centrino 2, previously code named Montevina,
came after a delay of several months and was
decidedly lower
key than the launch of the first Centriono chips in 2003. The
chips are mainly intended to go into notebook computers, as
the PC industry moves to more mobile devices with new lighter
technologies and development of new wireless networks. |

IT sector
growth may dip in 2008-09, Nasscom
According to NASSCOM, the Indian IT industry which has been
clocking an impressive
growth
rate in recent years, is likely to see a slow down in 2008-09
due to competition from China, Philippines and Sri Lanka. The
growth rate
might come down by 6% due to the competition, besides economic
uncertainty and lesser IT spends. A recent survey by NASSCOM
revealed the industry grew by 28 to 29% in the last years, but
their forecast is that it will go down to 22-24% in 2008-09.
However, it would not have any impact on the long-term prospects
of the sector which is set to cross the $60 billion mark this
year. |

Durable cost likely to rely on dole-outs to beat inflation
Consumer durables makers may be forced to offer discounts and
freebies to woo consumers in the wake of inflationary trends,
which have dampened buying sentiments. Already grappling with
rising input costs and thinning profit margins, the industry is
hoping that new models and fresh launches will entice consumer
to showrooms. Currently, most of the companies seem hesitant to
dole out usual discounts and freebies in a bid to protect
margins. |
