Ministry of Defence approves Strategic Partnership guidelines

The Ministry of Defence approved guidelines for the Strategic Partnership model aimed at giving a push to indigenous defence manufacturing, over a year after the policy was unveiled in May, 2017. "This will give a major fillip towards encouraging self-reliance and aligning the defence sector with the Make in India initiative of the Government," a defence ministry statement said.

The Indian Navy's demand for Naval Utility Helicopters will be the first project to be undertaken as a part of the strategic partnership model. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took the decision on Monday, days after a parliamentary panel said that nothing concrete has been done to implement the strategic partnership model. The policy would make the country self-reliant by reducing defence exports.

The DAC also accorded approval for the acquisition of eight fast patrol vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard under category (what category? please clarify) at an approximate cost of Rs 800 crore. These vessels will be indigenously designed and manufactured and would strengthen maritime security by undertaking day and night patrolling of the seas, including interception of vessels and personnel engaged in anti-sabotage. By making the strategic partnership model, the government aims at reducing defence imports that currently account for 60 per cent of military acquisitions.

Railway Board puts Rs 3,000 crore CCTV project on the back burner

The Railway Board has put a proposal by the Prime Minister’s Office to install CCTVs at all stations and in train coaches on the slow track as it figures out how to fund the Rs 3,000-crore project that will require about half a million cameras to be set up.  During a review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March, the rail board was told to place cameras at all stations and in the coaches of all 11,000 trains for enhanced passenger safety and crowd management. A tender was to have been issued in March by RailTel Corporation, which owns an optic fibre network along the nation’s railway tracks.  “Board felt that CCTVs are a security aid and not an item of safety for train operations. Hence, pragmatism is required while making investment,” according to the minutes of a July 11 board meeting chaired by Ashwani Lohani.

States are Poised to Lead India’s EV Revolution

It has been almost five years since the launch of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). The plan was aimed at achieving national fuel security by promoting hybrid and electric vehicles (EV) in the country as a means of intelligent and sustainable transportation. The estimated investment for the plan is ~$3 billion (~₹192.8 billion) and India is targeting the deployment of five to seven million EVs in the country by 2020. In addition to NEMMP, the government has also launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles (FAME) program with an initial outlay of ₹750 million (~$11.56 million) to provide a major push for the early adoption and creation of a market for both hybrids and EVs.

In line with the Government of India’s vision of achieving 100 percent e-mobility by 2030, the country has also been launched the National E-Mobility Program .

Policy To Make India Hub For Defence Manufacturing to be announced soon

The government is likely to unveil a major policy next month outlining a roadmap to build a robust defence production industry and make India one of the top five manufacturers of military equipment and platforms in the next 10 years. Official sources said the final touches are being given to the policy before it is being placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. They said a significant focus of the defence production policy (DPP-2018) will be to invest adequate resources to develop critical technology for manufacturing state-of-the-art military platforms including fighter jets, attack helicopters and weaponry indigenously.

The DPP-2018 is likely to be released next month, the sources said.

According to the draft policy, the government is looking at achieving a turnover of Rs. 1,70,000 crore in military goods and services by 2025. A Swedish think tank, in a report in March, said India remained the largest importer of military hardware in the world in the last five years, adding Indian imports of major weapons rose by 111 per cent in the last five years compared to 2004-08. Officials said the aim of the DPP would be to indigenously develop all major platforms which are being imported since in the last six decades. According to official figure, India inked 187 contracts worth Rs. 2.40 lakh crore with foreign and domestic firms for various military equipment and weapons in the last four years. However, majority of the projects are yet to take off due to procedural delays.

Officials said the DPP is also likely to simplify the procurement process by cutting several layers of approval which often cause delays. They said the policy aims to make India one of the top five manufacturers of defence platforms with active participation of public and private sectors.

AI removes real estate intermediaries, creating positive user experience

While artificial intelligence (AI) has certainly reached the peak of its hype cycle, actual mainstream adoption seems inevitable. It is amply established that whether in science or business, machines will represent the greatest collaborators for human beings. Some of the early wins that have been witnessed across sectors is almost complete disintermediation, but, will AI ever be cognitive to customer needs?  A click away from your next decision: The Indian e-commerce players were some of the natural early adopters of AI in India, with not just bots taking over from humans, but also building in an experience that the customer now expects and appreciates. They were followed by brick-and-mortar retailers to gather stock keeping unit (SKU)-performance and customer preferences to personalise their product promotions. Today, it is no longer restricted to e-commerce; a lot of other sectors, especially traditionally inclined ones like real estate and even B2B (business to business) firms are seeing the value of an online experience that counsels customers into making informed decisions, while still keeping it human.

India Test Fires BrahMos Supersonic Missile Under ‘Extreme Weather Conditions’

The Indian Ministry of Defense’s research arm, the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO), and the Indian Army have test fired a supersonic BrahMos cruise missile under “extreme weather conditions” on July 16, the Indian defense minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, said in a statement today. The test launch of the BrahMos surface-to-surface cruise missile took place at 10:17 a.m. local time today at a test range in Balasore district in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. “The test was under extreme weather conditions with sea-state 7 (waves as high as 9 m),” the Indian defense minister tweeted earlier today. The BrahMos, fired from a static inclined launcher, flew in its pre-set trajectory meeting its mission objectives, according to DRDO. “The missile was tested as part of the service life extension program for the Indian Army,” Sitharam added. “This successful [DRDO] trial validates the extension and reinforces the all-weather capabilities of the BrahMos missile.”

In due course, if you get a sub-standard product through any e-commerce platform, both the manufacturer and the platform could be held guilty. Also, that e-commerce platforms mandatorily disclose the terms and conditions they have entered into with the sellers. Officials said the new rules, being prepared by the consumer affairs department, will be incorporated in the revised consumer protection law which is awaiting Parliament approval, as an enabling provision. “The new rules would be a complete and comprehensive set of guidelines, on e which would give needed clarity to the sector,” a senior official said.

Delivering to Bharat: Here is how dismal internet penetration creating barrier for rural population to use e-commerce

In a short span of time, e-commerce has made great waves, servicing consumers across India. But a noticeable lacuna has been rural India, which, due to a lack of internet penetration, still remains majorly off the e-commerce grid. As per ‘Internet in India 2017’, a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India and market research firm IMRB Kantar, there’s a wide gap between urban and rural India when it comes to internet penetration. As per the report, internet penetration in urban India stood at 64.84% in December 2017, while for rural India, it was a dismal 20.26%.  Clearly, there’s a long way to go to bring the rural populace of the country into the e-commerce fold. This is especially significant given that the rural retail market in India is booming. According to information and data measurement company Nielson, the consumer goods consumption market in India will grow 10-11% in 2018. In fact, the rural market has already shown 1.4 times higher growth than the urban market in the first quarter of 2018. “For a long time now, Indian rural markets have clocked higher growth than urban markets mainly because the headroom for growth is bigger for the rural space, and affordability and awareness are growing,” said Sameer Shukla, executive director, retail measurement services, south Asia, Nielson, in a recent report.

The country’s second largest television maker, LG India has started open cell manufacturing of televisions in India at its Pune facility with two models and plans to scale it up while deciding to pass on the benefits derived from lower taxation from such manufacturing to consumers, a senior company official said.  Talking to ET, LG Electronics India director (home entertainment) Younchul Park said the open cell manufacturing of televisions has started from May with 32 and 43-inch sizes. He, however, did not share the investment details.  “How fast we can scale it up depends on market adoption.  In open cell manufacturing, companies import television panels in open-cell state which would require further assembling before being ready to be used into television assembling. Apart from LG, Samsung too has invested in that manufacturing process to save on import duties.

“Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
