TRAI won’t regulate in-flight tariff over Indian airspace

A new report has come up which informs that a top official said that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) would not regulate the tariff which air passengers will pay for making calls and browsing the Internet in-air. Although, it won’t be the case for mobile phone operators, sector watchers and aviation experts, as they said that there was some dependency on the intermediaries and thus the revenue will be miniscule compared to the investment which will be required to make in-air telecom services possible, one reason for this will also be the short routes of domestic flights. As per a report by ET, RS Sharma, Trai Chairman said “Tariffs are under forbearance in the entire telecom sector and it (in-flight connectivity) will not be an exception.

Indian govt. steps up focus on electronics exports, new policy to outline measures

The government is drafting the upcoming National Electronics Policy (NEP) with an increased focus on exports as it looks to harness the local capacity in electronic goods, including smartphones built for the domestic market, a top official told ET. The idea is to ensure that there is no excess manufacturing capacity and instead utilize the same to build products for customers globally. India is producing close to 22.5 crore mobile phones and the total consumption is around 35 crore in India currently.

IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad: The Digital India programme has transformed into a "mass movement" and the government will soon finalize a new electronics policy to build on the momentum, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said. It will also push ahead to meet the ambitious goal of increasing the size of India's digital economy to $1 trillion in the coming years. We are soon going to finalize the new electronics policy whose sub-segment will be export-oriented initiatives in the field of electronics. The idea is to make India a big hub of electronics manufacturing to serve domestic as well as outside markets," Prasad told PTI.

Centre to incorporate electronics manufacturing specifications in segments ruled by imports in new NEP

“It is very important for us to also grow seriously in many other segments where imports are ruling the market, we have huge scope in India for – medical electronics, automotive electronics, power electronics, defence electronics and we are hoping to sit with industry to understand as to what will it take specifically to make it happen in India and that is going to be part of the new national policy on electronics, which we are coming out with,” said Ajay Prakash Sawhney, secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) at an ASSOCHAM conference on Electricals & Electronics Manufacturing. Talking about the increasing number of SMT (surface mount technology) lines for PCB (printed circuit board) assembly, Sawhney said that his ministry expects that this year India would be able to attract about 400 SMT lines, marking a very significant increase in number of SMT lines that exist. “Hopefully in a couple of years’ time and we are working hard towards this goal, we would be able to get most of the important sub-assemblies and the basic components also increasingly being manufactured in India, this helps us in value addition,” he said.

WTO dispute on export schemes: India to engage with US

India today said it will engage with the US to explain its position on export schemes following America's decision to drag India into the WTO against programmes to incentivize shipments, a top official said. America yesterday challenged India's export subsidy programmes such as Merchandise Exports from India Scheme in the World Trade Organization (WTO), saying these initiatives harm the US companies by creating an uneven playing field. “The US has asked for a consultation process, we will engage fully in the process and we would make sure that we make our position known to the US. We expect that they would also engage with a positive spirit with an effort to resolve a dispute with a friendly country,” Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia told reporters here. Developed countries have raised issues at different forums that as India has crossed the USD 1,000 threshold of the per capita gross national income (GNI) for three consecutive year, it is no longer eligible to give export subsidies. The secretary said that a clause of WTO’s Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures provides a period of eight years for graduating countries (crossing the USD 1,000 mark) to phase out export subsidies.

CAIT files petition in CCI against Walmart-Flipkart deal

Traders body CAIT today said it has approached the Competition Commission of India (CCINSE 0.00 %) against the Walmart-Flipkart deal, stating that it will create unfair competition and an uneven level playing field for domestic players. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said the deal would deny market access to non-preferred sellers and impact small traders on offline platform.  The confederation has "filed its objection petition in CCI against the Walmart-Flipkart deal," it said in a statement. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Monday said it has filed its objection petition in the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against the Walmart-Flipkart deal stating that it will create unfair competition in the industry. The petition has been filed by CAIT’s advocate Abir Roy.

The traders body, which represents about 7 crore traders across India, has strongly objected to the merger and has expressed concern that Walmart may indulge in predatory pricing and deep discounts. “Flipkart is a combination of predation, exclusive tie-ups and of preferential sellers where even online vendors face discriminatory conditions and Walmart being the owner by virtue of 77 per cent share is bound to give preference to its inventory. There will be denial of market access to non-preferred sellers coupled with complete annihilation of small time traders on offline platform,” CAIT said in a statement.

The Indian hardware ecosystem: trends and insights

India has always been known for its development and progress in the software sector rather than hardware and systems innovations. Indeed, it is difficult for a country so centred on services to change into a nation of products companies. The biggest challenge hardware and systems startups face is the lack of a well-developed infrastructure. The presence of lab facilities for testing the prototypes of these products before taking them to the market, were almost non-existent in the earlier days. Another major challenge that entrepreneurs faced was a lack of trained personnel and experienced mentorship for new recruits and team members.

Flipkart, Wal-kart or Flip-Mart: In its hour of need, Walmart must focus on in-house brands and not on re-branding

These days, twitterati is asking, will it be Flipkart, Wal-kart or Flip-Mart? That isn't the only question on people's minds. They want to know: What will Walmart Inc.'s India e-commerce business be called? Should Walmart advertise its acquisition of Flipkart and announce its now-exalted status in India, especially considering how it had to cut ties with the Bharti Group? So, when one talks of changes at Flipkart, will a re-branding exercise be the change needed at all? Walmart's move will see it invest almost $16 billion for a near 77 percent stake in Flipkart, but for scores of e-commerce shoppers in India, the name Flipkart continues to top recall. The home-grown e-commerce company is a giant in its own right and has the ability to overshadow brand Walmart in India, said experts.

Digital India comes of age: Under the Modi government it is giving rise to employment, entrepreneurship and empowerment

After coming to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the vision of Digital India as an important programme to transform India through the power of technology and bridge the digital divide. Other programmes like Start-up India, Stand-up India and Skill India were designed to become an important adjunct to this larger narrative. Four years down the line, empirical evidence suggests that Digital India is not only creating empowerment but also generating employment opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship. Laying down of 2,74,246 km of optic fibre connecting 1.15 lakh gram panchayats under BharatNet, in comparison to a mere 358 km under the previous government, speaks volumes about the speed with which we have created digital infrastructure.

India is at start of e-mobility S Curve: ABB CEO

For e-mobility to happen, you need four building blocks. In India, we have a very strong local value end. In the renewables integration, more than 50% of the solar power is powered up with ABB technology. So, I think we are the ideal partner for India to really drive e-mobility going forward. We are also the ideal partner for car OEMs, to make sure that cars are rolling with the right charging infrastructure that we have. We will do this as we have done in all the new businesses that we brought in India. First, we will have the pilots and then we will localize the technology, put it into our local value chain, and have full local value and have job creation. Look at solar, we brought in global technology, we localized the technology, we set up a local value chain, invested in manufacturing, and today we are fully integrated. In the rail sector, we have done the same.

“Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
